We’ve received questions recently pertaining to how Lono’s intelligent scheduling works. Let’s take a look.
Identifying baseline schedules
Upon first installing a Lono device and connecting it to the internet, the next step is to configure attributes associated with all of one’s zones. Some of these attributes include sprinkler type, plant type, sunlight (e.g., full, partial, shade), slope variance and soil type.
Then, these attributes are sent to Lono’s cloud (i.e., LOUD) where our algorithms act upon them using real-time weather data, geographic location data and historical evapotranspiration data; thus creating a zone’s scheduling baseline. In this case, the Garden zone’s baseline is 22 minutes of watering per cycle.
If a user finds that the mins / watering is is too much time or too little, they can increase or decrease the amount of time a zone will water per cycle simply by clicking the up and down arrows.
Times available for watering
After zones have been configured, Lono uses the data mentioned earlier to create “Times Available for Watering”. Throughout these available windows of time, Lono will cycle through all of the enabled zones.
Users can choose to increase or decrease the “Times Available for Watering” in order to ensure they’re watering optimally. Additionally, users have the option to enable or disable specific “Times Available for Watering” whenever they’d like.
What about instances where users need to have a particular zone water on its own unique schedule? For that, we’ve introduce “Customer Watering”. In the zone attribute configuration, a user simply needs to enable the “Custom Watering” toggle. From there, a user can create “Times Available for Watering” specific to the enabled custom zone.
Along with these scheduling features, Lono also allows users to account for watering restrictions (e.g., odd days, even days, etc). Many municipalities enforce strict watering restrictions during peak watering times in their communities.

We’ve found this approach offers users a good balance of intelligent scheduling, for optimizing watering efficiency, while at the same time still giving users the freedom they need to account for attributes and nuances distinct to their lawns.
